Description

The Center for Science and the Schools (CSATS) is seeking to hire a STEM Education Outreach Specialist with an emphasis on Computer Science. Penn State CSATS focuses on developing programs that translate STEM research into the school context. In our work with faculty in the Penn State STEM Colleges, we learn about technical research in wide array of disciplines (e.g., meteorology, agricultural sciences, anthropology, cybersecurity, bioinformatics, engineering) and work collaboratively with STEM researchers and graduate students to develop programs for K-12 teachers. These programs often introduce educators to computer programming that is used as part of the research activities. As computer science and computational thinking are increasingly important parts of research and the workforce, K-12 teachers are looking for methods to better integrate these concepts into their classrooms. The Center is taking a lead role in better preparing educators to take on this task through STEM and computer science professional development programs. Primary responsibilities of the position include: assisting Penn State science and engineering (particularly computer science/ engineering) faculty in designing and implementing programs that support K-12 teachers’ learning, particularly the computer science that is related to their research; modeling best pedagogical approaches; writing portions of grant proposals that include computer science; engaging in design, management, implementation, and evaluation of CSATS teacher professional development programs, and contributing to the state-level efforts to improve computer science teaching and learning (e.g., serve on CS for All PA committee). Our programs extend beyond central Pennsylvania to include culturally and ethnically diverse schools and districts. As such, this position may require travel. Required qualifications include: Master’s degree in education, preferably in STEM education or a closely related field; Bachelor’s degree or advanced undergraduate coursework in a science or engineering; Strong proficiency in computer science with working knowledge of multiple programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript, C/C++); Experience in education/outreach programs involving computer science with K-12 educators and/or students; and Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams. Additional desired qualifications include: Doctoral degree in education (science/engineering/STEM education preferred); Secondary-level teaching experience in formal or informal settings; Project management experience; and Strong academic writing skills. Applicants should upload a cover letter describing their qualifications, current curriculum vitae, university transcripts, and three professional references (names, mail and e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers). The Pennsylvania State University is committed to and accountable for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its forms. We embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusive excellence that supports both broad and specific diversity initiatives, leverage the educational and institutional benefits of diversity, and engage all individuals to help them thrive. We value inclusive excellence as a core strength and an essential element of our public service mission. This is a 48 week, fixed-term academic appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with an excellent possibility of re-funding. Salary is commensurate with education and experience; full Penn State benefits apply.
