The Strategic Interdisciplinary Research Office (SIRO) is a research administration unit that is part of the Office of the Vice President for Research. The Office of the Vice President for Research is responsible for facilitating the $927-million-per-year research enterprise at Penn State by working with a broad range of units across the University. The mission of the Office of the Vice President for Research is to support a rigorous program of faculty and student research and creative accomplishment by enhancing the environment for scholarly and artistic endeavors, encouraging the highest standards of quality, and fostering ethical conduct in research. SIRO’s mission is to provide direct support for strategic multi-college and multi-institutional research efforts. This position will provide a variety of proposal development support services across Penn State’s 24 campuses serving diverse community of students, faculty, and staff. As a member of a cross-functional team that includes faculty researchers and research administrators, this position will take lead in drafting non-technical sections of research grant proposals, perform editing tasks on technical and non-technical sections, advise primary investigators on successful strategies for incorporating graphics and figures into proposal documents, coordinate and plan meetings, ensure that timelines are met with respect to proposal submission deadlines, coordinate communications between primary and co-primary investigators within and outside of Penn State, review proposals to ensure that they comply with agency requirements, develop institutional knowledge of Penn State University personnel, research resources, and equipment, and gather data and resources to assist faculty with conceptualizing non-technical aspects of a research program. The types of proposals that are supported often describe complex scientific or technical topics, so the successful candidate must have experience with scientific or technical communications and can quickly grasp scientific concepts. This requires scientific background, strong project management skills, great attention to detail, exceptional technical writing and editing skills, and comfort with multiple citation styles and reference management software. Familiarity is expected with advanced Microsoft Word editing features for figure/table embedding and positioning, table of contents generation, header and footer formatting, and section management. This position must be able to work on projects with short turnaround times and tight deadlines and must be comfortable interacting with university faculty.
