The Nixon Lab at The Pennsylvania State University https://bmb.psu.edu/directory/btn1) is recruiting an outstanding Postdoctoral Scholar funded by the Center for Lignocellulose Structure and Formation (CLSF; http://www.lignocellulose.org/). The focus of this project is utilizing high-resolution single particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) and cryo-tomography (cryoET) to investigate the structural biology of membrane proteins involved in cellulose biosynthesis for generation of plant cell walls. The lab is also interested in the structure and function of the product - cellulose microfibrils. This position will provide opportunities to collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists working at the cutting edges of cell wall research. The Post Doc will have access to four microscopes at the Huck Institutes Cryo-EM Facility: a one-of-a-kind G2 Titan Krios (300 keV configured with Cs image corrector, Gatan Quantum GIF (EFTEM/EELS), STEM, on-axis BF/DF detector, Volta phase pate, Falcon 3E DED and a Gatan K2 DED); a Talos Arctica (200keV, with Falcon 3E and Gatan K3 DED) arrives in July 2019; and Tecnai Biotwin Spirit (120 keV) and Tecnai LaB6 for negative staining. Two full time support staff maintain and assist in data collection. In addition to its CryoEM facility, Penn State also provides facilities for X-ray crystallography, NMR, various other spectroscopies, biological fermentations, DNA synthesis and sequencing, and computational biology to mention a few. Applicants should have experience in structural biology (preferably cryoEM or cryoET), molecular biology including handling eukaryotic cell lines for protein production, and membrane protein chemistry.
