The laboratory of Dr. Shaun Mahony in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at Penn State is seeking a Computational Scientist to perform computational biology analysis and software development in the area of regulatory genomics. The primary focus of the computational Scientist position is to develop machine learning approaches for characterizing protein-DNA interactions in very large collections of ChIP-seq and ChIP-exo datasets. This Computational Scientist will build and maintain bioinformatics pipelines, analyze and interpret experimental results, develop new computational methods, and co-author research reports for presentation or publication. Developing and applying the computational analysis approaches will be carried out in close collaboration with the laboratories of Dr. Frank Pugh and Dr. Ross Hardison. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in a field of study with focus on computational research methods or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience developing machine learning applications and/or regulatory genomics analysis methods is strongly preferred. Experience with Linux and git is also preferred. Strong programming experience in a common language (such as Java, Python, C/C++, Perl, or R) is required. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of re-funding.
