The Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory (AASL) provides analytical testing and research-based recommendations to support sustainable resource management decisions. The lab offers comprehensive analyses of soil, water, plant tissue, manure, compost, and other agricultural materials. This position primarily assists with receiving, sorting, and preparation of sample materials including soils, plants, manures, biosolids, and composts for analysis. Preparation includes drying, grinding, uniform mixing, subsampling, and quantitatively transferring to appropriate containers. Additional tasks include performance of routine procedures such as filtration using gravitational and vacuum extraction, quantitative transfer and bringing samples to volume in volumetric containers, precise weighing, and cleaning, and the operation of analytical pipettes, pH and ion specific electrodes, drying ovens, and muffle furnaces. This position also assists with inventory and data collection and entry into the Laboratory Information Management System Filemaker database. All tasks will be performed following procedures specified in the standard operating procedures manual. Preference will be given to current undergraduate students in the Penn State College of Agriculture. Previous laboratory experience is preferred, but not required.
