The Advanced Coatings Department of the Materials and Manufacturing Office (MMO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking two Part-Time Engineering Support Specialists with an interest in material design, material synthesis, processing, characterization, and coating fabrication for a broad range of applications. Responsibilities include: Setting up and conducting experiments; collecting data through characterization techniques; analyzing and extrapolating data; and communicating results effectively. Typically requires an Associate’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Engineering Science and Mechanics, or Aerospace Engineering. Preferred experience areas include: Development of materials and coatings made from nanocomposites, nanolayered, multilayered, functionally graded, and multifunctional material systems; material synthesis, processing, characterization, and coating fabrication for a broad range of applications; experience with ceramics, metals, and mixed combinations in a research or laboratory based setting; computational modeling; proficiency in various analytical characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), optical profilometry (OP), tribology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), particle size distribution (PSD) analysis, failure analysis, and metallography; and experience in process development, experimental design, and materials processing. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
