The Networks and Servers Department of the Enterprise Operations Office at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking an experienced, security-minded Network Systems Specialist. Responsibilities include: Administer, develop, and maintain network devices and the services supporting them within ARL; provide support to other IT staff and employees within ARL on network related issues; evaluate products, recommend solutions, and interface with vendors; work with network devices and services logs to improve security; and identify and remediate vulnerabilities within the network. This job will be filled as a level 3, or a level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information Science and Technology is desired. Preferred experience areas include: Department of Defense or Federal-related computing systems; advanced network administration in a mid-size heterogeneous environment; Enterprise WAN/LAN switching and routing; Layer 7 firewalls (Palo Alto); management of Linux and Windows servers; and other network supporting services such as Type 1 encryptors, Wireless infrastructure, VLANs, VPNs, IPAM, NAC, DNS, and DHCP. An IT security certification is preferred. The successful candidate will be professional, reliable, self-motivated, capable of multitasking, able to maintain discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive matters, and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
