The Strategic Interdisciplinary Research Office (SIRO) is a cross-campus research administration unit that is part of the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR). The OVPR is responsible for facilitating $927-million-per-year research enterprise at Penn State by working with a broad range of units across the university. SIRO’s mission is to provide direct support for strategic multi-college and multi-institutional research efforts. This position will play an important role in fulfilling SIRO’s mission by contributing on variety of proposal development activities across all the colleges. The position will directly report to the Assistant Director, Proposal Development, SIRO, and will have access to research administrators across departments, colleges and OVPR. As a member of a cross-functional team that includes faculty researchers and research administrators, this position will assist with complex and interdisciplinary proposals. Duties include reviewing and disseminating grant submission guidelines, assisting faculty teams with planning and writing of various sections of research grant proposals, advising primary investigators on successful strategies for grant writing, coordinating collaboration within and outside of Penn State, and developing strategies for positioning a proposal to have best opportunity for funding. This position is expected to closely work with high-profile faculty teams and thus excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills are essential. The types of proposals that are supported by SIRO often comprise of complex scientific or technical topics, so the successful candidate must have experience with scientific or technical writing and have the ability to quickly grasp complex concepts. This requires strong project management skills, great attention to detail, understanding of basic scientific principles, and comfort with reading published literature. Familiarity is expected with advanced Microsoft Word editing features for figure/table embedding and positioning, table of contents generation, header and footer formatting, reference management and section management. Familiarity with use of reference management software’s such as Endnote will be expected. The position requires flexibility, multi-tasking and self-management of tasks. The candidate must be able to work on projects with tight deadlines and must be comfortable interacting with faculty and staff across multiple units. The candidate must be aware of major funding agencies and foundations supporting STEM research, e.g., National Science Foundation,National Institutes of Health, United States Department of Agriculture, Department of Defense, and Department of Energy. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Research Masters or Ph.D. preferred. Prior experience with proposal submission activities is desired but not essential to apply. Application reviews will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with good possibility of re-funding.
