Description

Core Responsibilities: Assist members of the Research Services team with patron requests either through face to face interviews, phone, or email conversation. Provide researchers with in-person assistance in the Special Collections Library Reading and Reference Rooms, including the retrieval of archival collections and rare books for researchers’ use. Provide service to researchers during Reference Desk shifts; conduct reference interviews to determine scope of researchers’ needs. Supervise the reading room and use of Special Collections materials during four to five reference desk shifts each week. Conduct research and respond to remote reference requests, via email and telephone. Use library catalog, SCL finding aids, Aeon system, and other internal databases to locate relevant collection material. Oversee the organization and use of the Eberly Family Special Collections Library hold room, where collection material stored at off-site storage facilities are held temporarily during research use. Manage the flow of materials in and out of the hold room. Request and track researcher requests for materials stored in annexes using the Aeon system. Send notifications to researchers when materials are available in the reading room for their use. Additional job duties: Re-shelve books and archival material on as-needed basis. Collaborate with members of the Collections Management Team to identify materials that may require rehousing, relabeling, or cataloging corrections. Assist in the creation of policies and procedures to standardize and improve reference interactions and public service. During fall and spring semesters, Sunday afternoon and Wednesday evening hours will be part of the employee’s schedule. Schedule will be determined by mutual agreement with supervisor. Required skills: Exceptional organizational ability. Customer service aptitude. Strong communication skills. Sensitivity to and aptitude for handling rare and fragile materials. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word. Strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion. Desired skills: Experience working in a library or other similar setting. Familiarity with special collections material (archives, manuscripts, rare books, etc.). Non-English language(s) proficiency.
