The Strategic Interdisciplinary Research Office (SIRO) is a research administration unit under the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) dedicated to providing active support for the development of large-scale and strategic proposals. SIRO supports these multi-college and multi-institutional efforts, while also providing research administrative services for research institutes and units reporting to the OVPR. SIRO is under the direction of the Associate Vice President for Research and Strategic Initiatives and is seeking a highly skilled professional for the job of Proposal and Award Generalist. This job will report to the Pre-Award Grants and Contract Manager and will perform most work activities in a large volume, fast paced, complex, detailed, and multifaceted environment. The selected individual’s job responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: reviewing and processing awards and contracts; leading and reviewing complex proposals for University signature and submission to government agencies, private companies, and foundations; advising faculty in all aspects of proposal writing and preparation; preparing proposal subsections including budgets and non-technical components of applications; reviewing and interpreting sponsor solicitations to advise proposal development teams; and determining project expenditure compliance with guidelines. The individual in this position will work with faculty, Associate Research Deans, and Institute Directors to develop and process complex matching requests to the OVPR; obtain departmental, College and University approvals as required; assist the Contract Manager with team training; and establish and maintain award set-ups. This position will serve as a primary pre-award liaison with sponsors, Office of Sponsored Programs, Research Accounting, Risk Management Office, Office of Technology Management, and the Office of Research Protections. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The preferred candidate will be qualified to be approved as an Authorized Organizational Representative with full signature authority. Familiarity with advanced Microsoft Word and Excel functions, Strategic Information Management System (SIMS) grant reporting and budget functions (or similar institutional programs), and award management experience are highly preferred. Knowledge of government regulations and University policies applicable to sponsored research is mandatory. Requires flexibility and self-management skills, including the ability to prioritize among a large number of diverse responsibilities. Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills required. Capability to work both independently and as a team member, ability to multi-task and respond professionally in challenging situations is essential. Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or strong desire to obtain certification is ideal. SIRO provides services across 13 colleges, 24 campuses, and 7 institutes to secure funding to support and grow research initiatives at Penn State.
