The Strategic Interdisciplinary Research Office (SIRO) within the Office of the Vice President for Research is seeking a highly skilled professional Technical Communications Specialist to provide support to faculty in the development of research grant proposals. This position reports to the Assistant Director and works closely with the entire SIRO team. The successful candidate will develop creative and effective diagrams, infographics, and data charts that can visually convey complex research ideas in a written proposal document to funding agencies. We are looking for an individual who will be adept working independently and as part of a team in a deadline-driven environment that serves the needs of research faculty. This position will also assist with the development and management of the SIRO website, currently hosted in Drupal, and may be asked to produce slide presentations, posters, and graphics for special unit reports or marketing materials as needed. Ability to produce custom graphics including original illustrations and technical drawings as well as charts, graphs, tables, and other figures in support of grant proposals; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills are required. The successful candidate must be able to work directly with faculty to discuss, translate, and revise figures in a timely and professional manner. Ability to work with CMS based websites such as WordPress and Drupal. SIRO provides services across 13 colleges, 24 campuses, and 7 institutes to secure funding to support and grow research initiatives at Penn State. The successful candidate will be exposed to high-level, cutting edge research across a variety of disciplines and be actively involved in making meaningful contributions to the Penn State research enterprise. University Park is centrally located, just 3-4 hours by car from New York, Philadelphia Baltimore/Washington and Pittsburgh with a reliable commuter airport 10 minutes from campus. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Prior experience with science communication strongly preferred. Advanced word processing and graphical presentation skills (e.g. proficiencies with Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Design Suite) are required.
