We are seeking a Department Head to lead The Fluid Machinery Department (FMD). The FMD is part of the Fluid Dynamics Division, in the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office (FDAO). Through its research, the Division serves both the mission of the ARL as a Navy sponsored University Affiliated Research Center and the Land Grant mission of the University. The FMD is ARL’s leading resource for expertise in analytical and experimental fluid machinery, vehicle dynamics/control, and device performance testing and flow diagnostics. The department works with its sister department, the Fluids Research Department, on a broad spectrum of flow related research and development projects ranging from basic research and development through prototype development and commercial transition. These projects comprise a mix of both development-oriented contracts with specific deliverables and exploratory research grants, the former being predominant. FDM employees are expected to develop their own funded research programs consisting of individual and collaborative efforts. Collaboration across ARL departments and with Penn State faculty is strongly encouraged and is a unique feature of the ARL work environment. Responsibilities include: Develop and conduct interdisciplinary research projects, as well as provide technical leadership, expertise, and direction through the development of outstanding research; cultivate business opportunities related to the overall mission of the FMD; develop and execute the strategic vision, goals, and plans of the FMD, in concert with other units within the Division, FDA, and ARL; collaborate with project managers to ensure timely delivery of quality technical work by FMD staff; and operate and provide staff management, including preparation and execution of department budgets, and recruitment, development, and retention of FMD employees. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline is desired. Ph.D. is preferred. Preferred qualifications include ten years related experience beyond an MS degree or five years related experience beyond a Ph.D. Required background includes: Experimental or analytical fluid dynamics with an emphasis in fluid machinery and/or vehicle dynamics. The successful candidate must be capable of leading a strong research group of research faculty and engineers in a program management capacity and possess strong presentation and communication skills. Domestic travel is required approximately ten percent of the time for this position. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
