Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Campus Recreation for Programs, the Assistant Director of Aquatic Programs is responsible for the development, delivery, leadership and management of all recreational programmatic aspects for Aquatics and Safety on campus. Campus Recreation is a department within the division of Student Affairs that provides fitness programs, wellness, and recreational programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the following: IM Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs and Intramural Sports. The McCoy Natatorium is an 80,000 square foot facility containing three bodies of water: a 6 lane, 25-yard competition pool, a 6 lane 25-meter recreational pool and a diving well with springboard and 1 and 3 meter platforms. McCoy plays host to local, recreational and varsity swim, dive and water polo matches, informal recreational swimming, diving, water exercise and Boga Fit classes, a full youth and adult swim lesson program and special events such as canoe battleship, and dive in movies. During the summer months the Penn State Outdoor Pool serves campus via informal recreation, swim lessons and plays host to several athletic camps and area groups. This position will play a supportive role in the planning for a new, state-of-the art indoor Natatorium, scheduled to begin project planning within the next year. This position provides direct supervision to one full-time Coordinator and direct and/or indirect supervisor of the following student staff positions: student managers, head lifeguards, lifeguards, swim instructors and safety instructors (approximately 110 student staff). Specific responsibilities include program development and management of aquatics programming including assessment of existing and new programs; development, management and oversight of a $800,000+ aquatics programs budget; management, delivery and oversight of risk management protocols and practices; and mentoring and coaching student staff. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s Degree in educational administration, recreation or sport management, physical education, or a related field is preferred. Additional years of full-time experience managing collegiate or municipal programming with demonstrated experience in aquatic programming, event management, staff supervision and management is preferred. Knowledge of basic safety and risk management practices as they relate to aquatic programs and environments in indoor and outdoor areas is required. Leadership and supervisory skills to select, supervise, motivate and evaluate full-time and student staff relative to work performance, change management, and peer relationships as demonstrated through past supervision of staff is required. Budgeting skills to manage multiple program budgets and prioritize use of funds is essential. As a member of the Campus Recreation management team, the Assistant Director must have an understanding of departmental goals, vision and direction and be able to communicate this information with Coordinator and student staff. The ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of staff, student employees and participants is essential. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment as well as an eagerness to support and engage with all departmental initiatives and efforts as well as within the Division of Student Affairs. This position requires independent work on complex assignments, while reviewing progress and updating the Associate Director, Programs as appropriate. Knowledge of student development principles and ability to provide leadership and development opportunities for the general student body and student employees. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (oral and written) skills are essential. Must be able to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines and hold staff accountable. Attention to detail and good judgment are vital requirements. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment.
