Description

The Veterinary Entomology Laboratory in the Entomology department at the Pennsylvania State University seeks to fill a full-time appointment for a Research Technologist 1. Primary duties include rearing fly and parasitoid colonies following strict rearing and safety protocols, planning and providing arthropods including flies, parasitoids, and ticks for experimental use, maintaining clean equipment and lab areas associated with the laboratory facility, sheds, and vehicles, and assisting researchers with experiments. Additional duties include coordinating supply management and ordering, maintaining appropriate inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of the lab. Research support tasks in this role will include evaluating entomopathogenic fungi for use as biological control agents, testing tick repellents, and field work. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Ecology or similar highly preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience in tick bioassays for repellent action, setting up pitfall traps, and rearing filth flies. The successful candidate must be comfortable working with flies, maggots, and parasites. Must be available to work some weekends and holidays if necessary. The successful candidate should have project management and coordination skills, be a self-starter, have highly developed organizational and information-processing skills, possess strong communication skills, have the ability to work both independently and closely with other team members, and demonstrate excellent attention to detail and deadlines. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
