The Enterprise Operations Office at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking Engineering Designers to join our Mechanical and Electrical Design Department. Responsibilities include: Create solid models, detail drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, and other documentation using accepted methods and techniques; support moderate to complex research engineering programs utilizing computer aided design, documentation, databases, and/or manufacturing software tools; conceptualize, design, integrate, and package mechanical and electrical components into assemblies as part of larger systems in collaboration with R&D engineers, engineering aides, and senior personnel; provide recommendations on material selection, geometric tolerancing and dimensioning, ease of manufacturing/assembly, and cost effective design; utilize computer aided design software to create design documentation including notes and manufacturing information; ensure work is in compliance with accepted standards; direct the work of junior personnel (depending on level hired); provide work status updates to senior personnel and engineering staff; participate in design review meetings; assist in documentation control, file requests, prints, and database information; and supervise daily department activities. This job will be filled as a level 1, level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Associate's degree or higher in a Drafting or related discipline or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. An Associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electro-Mechanical Engineer Technology, or Drafting and Design Technology is desired. Experience in the following areas is preferred: Siemens NX (UGS, UGSolutions), MCAD software (v11 or higher), or similar design tools; Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Access); and product data management concepts or software tools. Previous training in Geometric Dimensioning, Tolerancing, and ASME Y14 documentation standards is desired. Experience in the following is required: Solid modeling and drafting CAD software to create mechanical designs and the related detail and assembly documentation; advanced knowledge of mechanical design concepts and the use of commercial hardware and components in packaging for a desired outcome. Employment with the ARL will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. These are one-year, fixed-term renewable appointments.
