The Olo Be Taloha (OBT) Lab in the Department of Anthropology at The Pennsylvania State University, welcomes applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join a collaborative research project investigating human-environment dynamics in African coastal environments using archaeological data and ethnohistorical records, starting in June 2019. This position is for one year, with possibility of renewal for a second year, pending successful external funding proposals. Qualified candidates will collaborate with OBT Lab Director, Dr. Kristina Douglass, and a team of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and affiliates of the OBT Lab and Human Ecology Program. The qualified candidate will be expected to participate in and help organize OBT Lab activities, including transcribing audio and written oral history interviews, documenting archaeological materials related to oral histories and analyzing archaeological survey data. Eligibility: Qualified candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree or have completed all of the requirements for a Ph.D. by the time of appointment. Candidates must have a strong background in African Archaeology and socio-ecological research. A high standard of written English is expected. Ability to conduct archival research in Malagasy and French languages, and familiarity with computational approaches to text mining (Python or R) are desirable.
