The Penn State School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs (SEDTAPP) is seeking a student communications intern to fill a part-time, writing-intensive position that will assist the department’s communications strategist. The student will be asked to work approximately 10-20 hours per week, which may include some evening and weekend hours at activities and events. Responsibilities will include: researching and writing news releases, feature stories, and media alerts; generating story ideas about SEDTAPP students and related activities; building a media distribution list for pitching departmental news and announcements; helping to maintain the department’s social media presence, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn; shooting photos and videos of SEDTAPP people and events; serving as a liaison to SEDTAPP student organizations; and assisting in special events. The ideal candidate should have strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills and be curious about activities related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The applicant must be dependable, flexible, and organized. The Intern must demonstrate attention to detail and possess solid oral communication skills. The internship is open to sophomores and juniors, as well as graduate students, majoring in journalism, public relations, marketing or related fields. Graduating seniors will not be considered. Applicants must have, at the very least, completed the writing course COMM 260W and be familiar with social media platforms. Courses in advanced writing and editing, photography, video, and digital media desirable. Experience with photo editing (Adobe Photoshop) and publication layout software (Adobe InDesign) would be helpful. This internship is for fall 2019 with an excellent possibility of rehire beyond the fall semester. The internship may be taken for credit or for pay.
