Penn State Harrisburg, a comprehensive college of The Pennsylvania State University, one of the largest and most widely recognized institutions in the nation, invites applications for a 48-week faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor that will oversee and direct the Institute of State and Regional Affairs (ISRA). The candidates must possess an earned doctorate and have a record of teaching and research achievements that qualify them for tenure in one of the five academic schools within the college. The individual serving in such a position will also possess strong skills in interpersonal communication and relationship building; experience finding external funding to support research and ISRA staff, operations, and activities; grant and technical writing expertise; experience in research, public policy, public administration, sociology, data sciences or other related fields; and supervisory experience of staff at different levels. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven record of interdisciplinary collaboration, experience working with academic units, and experience managing institutes and centers. The preferred starting date is August 15, 2019. ISRA is comprised of the Pennsylvania State Data Center, the Center for Survey Research, the Economic Development Course in Pennsylvania, and the ISRA Integrated Technology Center. It is 100 percent externally funded and conducts approximately $2 million in sponsored research activities each year. The Institute focuses on data collection, organization, management, and analysis; spatial analysis and mapping; and training and technology utilization. The mission of the Institute is to leverage unbiased data expertise and the resources of the Pennsylvania State University to provide multifaceted data and research support services. ISRA also strives to enrich the teaching and educational experience of engaged students and faculty through its activities. There are fifteen staff members in the Institute. To find out more about the Institute, visit: https://isra.hbg.psu.edu. The selected individual’s duties will be split 50-50 between his/her faculty activities and those for directing ISRA. As a faculty member, the individual is expected to perform well in his/her responsibilities in scholarship of teaching, scholarship of research, and scholarship of service. As Director of ISRA, the individual’s duties include: building relationships and securing external funding; influencing organizational and community relations to develop and achieve strategic goals and manage customer relations; working with staff to build interdisciplinary teams for internal and external funding opportunities and pursuing, negotiating and administering project activity. Additional duties include: preparing and presenting reports; providing policy recommendations; linking unit operations to strategic objectives of the University; defining goals for future organizational performance and deciding on the tasks and use of resources needed to attain them; communicating goals to employees throughout the unit or organization and using influence to motivate employees to achieve organizational goals; ensuring operational and strategic direction and accountability; and exercising authority for unit policy and procedures and operational decisions for departments. Penn State Harrisburg is located in Middletown, near the city of Harrisburg, the state capital of Pennsylvania.
