The laboratory of Dr. Shaun Mahony in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at Penn State is seeking a Computational Scientist to manage computational biology analysis and software development projects in the area of regulatory genomics. The primary focus of the Computational Scientist position is to lead the development of machine learning approaches for characterizing protein-DNA interactions in very large collections of ChIP-seq and ChIP-exo datasets. This Computational Scientist will manage projects that aim to build and maintain bioinformatics pipelines, analyze and interpret experimental results, develop new computational methods, and prepare research reports for presentation or publication. Developing and applying the computational analysis approaches will be carried out in close collaboration with the laboratories of Dr. Frank Pugh and Dr. Ross Hardison. This job will be filled as a level 4 position, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Interested individuals should upload their curriculum vitae, a list of references, and a personal statement of background and interests. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Typically requires a Ph.D. degree in a field of study with focus on computational research methods plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience developing machine learning applications and/or regulatory genomics analysis methods is strongly preferred. Strong programming experience in a common language (such as Java, Python, C/C++, Perl, or R) is required, and experience with Linux and git is preferred. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of re-funding.
