Public Relations Specialist (Writer/Editor)

As a member of Penn State’s Office of Development Communications, you can play an integral role in one of the most respected and successful fundraising operations in the country and contribute to the land-grant mission and future strength of Penn State. Through our newly established Writer/Editor position, an experienced and versatile Writer/Editor will have the opportunity to support the University’s fundraising and stewardship activities, helping to solicit commitments and create an exceptional giving experience for our donors. The successful candidate will serve as a liaison with a broad range of University stakeholders to take the lead in developing and executing communication materials addressing strategic fundraising priorities at both the University and unit level. This position will create compelling messages across traditional and digital media to build a culture of philanthropy and secure support from the larger Penn State community. Working both independently and in close collaboration with the other members of the Development Communications and External Engagement teams, faculty members, and leaders across the University, the Development Communications Writer/Editor will research, organize, draft, and revise annual giving solicitations, web and social media content, written proposals, stewardship communications, and a variety of marketing materials in support of Penn State’s Office of University Development. Its duties may also include developing marketing plans; scripting for major donor events; presentations to individual donors and organizations; crisis communications; internal communications, such as content for the Division of Development and Alumni Relations intranet site; and messages, articles, and other contributions to Penn State development publications and digital media. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. The position demands not only superlative communication skills but also tact, persistence, integrity, and an ability to succeed under pressure, as well as the time-management skills to handle multiple deadlines with minimal supervision. Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate expertise in writing and editing, with special consideration given to experience in development communications, public relations, corporate communications, and/or journalism. The successful candidate will also have the ability to grasp and communicate intellectually challenging concepts, create both emotional and logical appeals, write in a wide range of styles and formats, and partner successfully with both individuals and teams. This Writer/Editor must also have a passion for higher education; an understanding of complex institutions; demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education; a dedication to and understanding of the skills required to build relationships with diverse communities; and a commitment to professional development, learning, and being mentored.
