The laboratory of Manuel Llinás (http://llinaslab.psu.edu) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Huck Institutes for the Life Sciences seeks applicants for a research technologist position. The main research focus in the Llinás lab is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the malaria disease. A current project we are recruiting for focuses on measuring the effect of antimalarial drugs on parasite metabolism. Candidates with interest in Plasmodium parasite biochemistry and metabolism are strongly encouraged to apply. In particular, we seek applicants to be part of a team of investigators working on antimalarial drug target identification (See: https://winzeler.ucsd.edu/malda/). This highly collaborative project is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and uses mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to determine the mode of action of a wide range of effective antimalarial compounds. Since this work is part of a larger consortium of activities surrounding the investigation of these compounds, detailed coordination of our efforts is critical to the success of this project. The Llinás lab has extensive experience measuring the effect of antimalarial drugs on parasite metabolism using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and NMR (Cowell et al. Science 2018, Leopold et al. The Journal of Infectious Diseases 2018, Allman et al. AAC 2016). The main role of this position will be to maintain Plasmodium cell cultures for the preparation and running of biological samples for analysis on various metabolomics instrumentation using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry or NMR. Acquired metabolomics data will be followed up with basic data analysis and problem solving. The technologist will be expected to conduct laboratory experiments independently while carefully managing and recording experimental conditions. In addition to these duties, the technologist will also contribute to the preparation of reagents and other support duties to facilitate a productive and efficient lab environment. The technologist is expected to be familiar with the current literature and projects of the lab, and will also maintain an independent research project and will participate in group meetings and perform other related duties as assigned. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior mass spectrometry experience is not required.Applicants should possess the ability to work well with others and must have excellent organizational skills and flexibility to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and have a strong attention to detail, and excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will be preferred. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with an excellent possibility of re-funding.
