Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Scholar position at the Pennsylvania State University’s College of Education with Dr. Scott McDonald beginning summer/fall of 2019 with a focus on geoscience education and teacher learning. This post-doctoral position is part of an NSF funded project, GEODE: Geological Models for Explorations Of Dynamic Earth, which has developed web-based visualization and modeling tools to help middle grade students learning Plate Tectonics. The project involves supporting teacher’s enactment and learning around these tools. The Post-Doctoral Scholar will also contribute to a second NSF funded project, GeoHazard: Modeling Natural Hazards and Assessing Risks, which is currently in the design and development phase. Both projects are in collaboration with the Concord Consortium. Successful applicants should have a Ph.D. in science education, learning sciences or a related field completed by time of appointment or September 1, 2019. The successful candidate should be prepared to: Contribute to and manage collection and analysis of project data, and the writing of peer-reviewed manuscripts for presentation and publication. Data will include video/audio/screen capture of classroom enactment, as well as pre/post and student work from the online curricular system.; Work collaboratively with the PI (Dr. Scott McDonald) to design and/or co-investigate questions leading to potential additional data collection, analyses, and peer reviewed publications. Preferred Qualifications: Expertise in qualitative or quantitative data analysis, in particular video analysis of classroom enactment is desired; Experience or familiarity with design-based research methodologies; Record of publication or presentations in peer-reviewed education outlets; Teaching experience, either at K-12 or university level; Experience working with middle and high school science teachers in a professional development or other learning context.
