Description

The Materials Characterization Laboratory (MCL) is a fully-staffed, open access, analytical research facility at Penn State’s Materials Research Institute, charged with enabling research while educating the next generation of highly qualified researchers. Staffed by more than 20 interdisciplinary scientists and engineers, we are passionate about education and collaborative problem-solving. Our laboratories occupy more than 15,000 square feet within the Millennium Science Complex (MSC). Each year the MCL supports more than 1000 users from more than 40 Penn State departments, and more than 100 external organizations (industry, government labs, and other academic institutions). The ideal candidate must have completed a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in the field of Biophysics, Biology, or Chemistry. The candidate must provide specialized, technical expertise in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) for a wide range of biological samples from sample preparation, measurements, to data analysis/interpretation. Additional skills must include extensive experience in surface chemistry, surface characterization, single-molecule biophysics, biological sample preparation for AFM, advanced single molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) skills, and its related AFM tip functionalization protocols. The candidate should further have a strong background in single molecular characterization of protein-nucleic acid interaction, AFM based receptor-ligand and virus-receptor interaction analysis, and combined AFM - fluorescence microscopy.
