Outreach Analytics and Reporting (OAR) aims to foster student success and optimize organizational effectiveness by facilitating data informed decision-making. OAR, which serves as the primary source of operational student reporting for the World Campus at Penn State University, has an exciting job opportunity for a bright, self-motivated individual who is interested in working in a collaborative, productive, and diverse team environment as a Data Analytics Consultant. The Data Analytics Consultant will help drive the strategy of the team to help ensure data provides valuable insights into supporting student success. The successful candidate will work with stakeholders and leadership to identify and prioritize research questions, retrieve and analyze data from multiple sources to track progress of key organizational performance indicators, prepare standard and ad hoc reports, compare consistency of data against other data sources, apply stringent QA processes to ensure accuracy, and establish automated procedures for analysis and reporting. S/he will provide leadership and present on complex data analyses and projects, requiring in-depth knowledge of Penn State Outreach & Online Education business processes and the ability to effectively communicate methodology and results to assist key stakeholders in making decisions. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience turning data into knowledge for a wide variety of audiences and providing recommended actions based on this knowledge. This position may provide analytical support to OAR’s data scientist, requiring a conceptual understanding of advanced statistical techniques and modeling. The Data Analytics Consultant may also help build analytic capabilities with other team members and stakeholders through guidance, consultation, and training. We seek candidates who are able to demonstrate experience and ability to advance Outreach’s diversity initiative. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Academic background in data analytics, statistics or a related discipline, and two years working in an academic setting working on student performance or retention reporting preferred. Experience using advanced data visualization tools is also preferred but not required. Requirements include a high level of proficiency in query writing using SQL or Microsoft Access, and in using Excel for manipulating and displaying data, including the use of pivot tables and charts. Demonstrated experience in statistical analysis techniques and software programs commonly used in quantitative research (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS) is highly desired.
