The Center for Science and the Schools (CSATS) is seeking to hire a STEM Education Outreach Specialist with an emphasis on computer science. Penn State CSATS focuses on developing ways to translate science research and education into the school context. These areas of research are diverse (e.g., meteorology, agricultural sciences, anthropology, cybersecurity, bioinformatics) and often involve the development of computer programs that support the research agenda. As computer science and computational thinking are increasingly important parts of research and careers, K-12 teachers are looking for methods to better integrate CS into their classrooms. The Center is taking a lead role in better preparing educators to take on this task through STEM and CS professional development programs. Primary responsibilities of the position include: assisting Penn State science and engineering (particularly computer science/ engineering) faculty in designing and implementing programs that support K-16 teachers’ learning of CS content and practices as they relate to their research agenda; modeling best pedagogical approaches; writing portions of grant proposals related to CS; engaging in design, management, implementation, and evaluation of CSATS teacher professional development programs, and contributing to the state-level efforts to improve CS teaching and learning (e.g., serve on CS for All PA committee). Our programs extend beyond central Pennsylvania to include culturally and ethnically diverse schools and districts. As such, this position may require travel. This position typically requires: a minimum of a Master’s degree or equivalent in a combination of STEM education and computer science/engineering; at least three years of formal or informal K-12 teaching experience, preferably at the secondary level with experience working with teaching diverse groups/ diverse students; experience teaching science, technology, engineering, and math concepts by integrating coding and computational thinking in the classroom; outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams. Additional desired qualifications include: skills in software design/programming; project management experience; and strong academic writing skills.
