The Materials and Manufacturing Office (MMO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at the Pennsylvania State University is looking for a Research and Development Engineer to join our Advanced Coating Department, part of our Materials Processing Division. We are looking for a highly motivated engineer to assist with various activities, which may include material synthesis, processing, characterization, device fabrication, and process simulation for fabrication and development of advanced coatings, materials and material systems for a broad range of programs involving electron beam physical vapor deposition, sputtering, chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor disposition, hot pressing, plating, and microelectronics fabrication. Potential material systems include ceramic, metallic, semiconductors, and/or mixed combination for corrosion resistance, wear resistance, erosion resistance, thermal protection, or optical performance. Other responsibilities include developing finite element models, set up and monitor experimental designs, and compile and analyzing data for a wide range of materials and coatings comprised of nanocomposite, nanolayered, multilayered, functionally graded, and multifunctional material systems for property enhancement and performance for a variety of applications in the aerospace, defense, tooling, biomedical, nuclear, microelectronic, and optical industries. This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline (Professional Engineer license accepted in lieu of Bachelor's degree) or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic Science and Engineering, or Metals Science and Engineering is highly desired. Experience in process development, design of experiments, and materials processing is preferred. Additional required competencies include a knowledge on a wide range of coating deposition processed as well as materials characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), tribology, x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), optical profilometry, and failure analysis. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. This is a one-year, fixed-term renewable appointment.
