Penn State Law’s Intellectual Property Clinic is seeking applicants for a Patent Attorney/Agent to help in the preparation, filing and prosecution of patents and trademarks. This position will assist the Director of the Intellectual Property (IP) Clinic in training law students to file and prosecute patents and trademarks before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Typical duties will include but are not limited to: providing advice and legal representation to clients on a broad range of IP legal matters, preparing and giving oral presentations, preparing written communications for educating undergraduate, graduate students, and Pennsylvanian community members about IP protection strategies, assisting the Clinic Director with teaching activities to include reviewing and editing student drafts and providing feedback on student work products. The Patent Attorney/Agent will be responsible for preparing and filing client work, as needed and will be responsible for managing administrative duties, including calendaring and docketing important patent and trademark deadlines. This position will help manage approximately 5 - 10 clinic students per semester. Typically requires a J.D. or L.L.B. from an ABA-accredited law school or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Successful candidate should be self-directed and able to manage patent projects with limited oversight, be able to work in a team, and should demonstrate the ability to analyze legal problems in a logical manner. The successful candidate must either be registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office or possess the background to sit for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Registration Examination as described in the General Requirements ( within three months of hire). Individuals who are patent agents (or can become patent agents within three months of hire) are also encouraged to apply. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
