The Advising Center is seeking a diverse team of aspiring undergraduate student leaders at the Wilkes-Barre campus to serve as New Student Orientation (NSO) Leaders. As a part of the NSO Team, leaders play a key role in providing a quality transitional experience for all incoming first-year students through the New Student Orientation program. New Student Orientation Leaders assist incoming Penn State students as well as their parents and family members by introducing the campus and its resources, speaking about the transition from high school to college, and acting as a representative of The Pennsylvania State University. Primary responsibilities include ensuring that orientation groups move through their workshops in a timely manner, providing general assistance with the college transition by sharing information on adjusting to college expectations and demands, balancing college with work and family commitments, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, personal responsibility. Orientation leaders respond in a professional manner to questions from students and families about university life using personal experiences, and encourage students to establish meaningful connections with other first-year students. New Student Orientation Leaders actively engage with students and families who attend NSO while providing a welcoming environment for all new Penn Staters. Interested applicants must be current full-time Penn State undergraduate students, will have obtained at least 24 credits by the end of the spring 2019 semester, and maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA. All applicants must participate in Child Abuse Training, a Penn State Student Conduct Record check, and a background check. Orientation Leaders must be available to work NSO on the following dates: May 22, June 27 (Evening), July 17, July 18, August 6 (Evening), August 8, August 22, 2019. Availability for NSO dates is non-negotiable. Compensation is $8.50/hour. New Student Orientation Leaders will gain improved work ethic, time management, collaboration, leadership, communication, and public speaking skills; have an opportunity to network with campus faculty and staff; and gain an increased understanding of careers in higher education.
