As a member of the Smeal College of Business’ leadership team reporting to the Dean, the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and Assistant/Associate Dean (CMO) is responsible for providing leadership in the development and execution of strategic marketing, communications, and business development plans for the College. This position will lead the development of a branding strategy for the Smeal College of Business and manage associated marketing, communications, and business development activities, including strategies for advertising, media/public relations, design, and digital initiatives. The CMO is responsible for strategic and annual planning, developing and monitoring metrics regarding internal and external advertising, management of external agencies and partners, coordinating activities with the University’s Office of Strategic Communications, as well as public relations activities in support of the College’s mission, vision and strategic goals. Primary responsibilities include daily leadership and management of the 4-person marketing and communication team and active collaboration with internal and external constituencies to effectively promote, monitor and evaluate marketing, recruitment, branding, and communication activities. Additional responsibilities include ensuring resources are efficiently and effectively utilized to have meaningful impact on College and University goals as they relate to recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students (resident and online), faculty and staff, as well as promoting relationships with students, alumni, donors, business leaders, and industry and community partners. The CMO will also be responsible for aligning activities with University-wide branding, marketing, and communications initiatives. This individual must be able to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, work closely with the senior leadership team and other campus constituencies and build consensus. Summary of Overall Responsibilities: This individual will be charged with building a state-of-the-art marketing and communications department; recommending staffing and budget needed to achieve College marketing objectives; balancing multiple priorities; effecting change in a large, decentralized and complex environment, establishing the foundation for a dynamic environment that embraces creativity and innovation; and fostering a spirit of teamwork and progressive thinking to help the College achieve its enrollment goals amidst the ever-growing offerings of resident and online programs. The successful candidate will be able to exercise good judgment in a fast-paced, dynamic, results-driven, and analytic environment and be willing to perform other emerging duties that support the mission, vision and goals of the Smeal College of Business and The Pennsylvania State University. Responsibilities include: Direct and oversee marketing and communications activities for the Smeal College of Business, with a focus on developing, implementing, and maintaining a strategic marketing and communications program to maximize the visibility of the school’s education, research, and service activities; lead development of Branding and College Marketing and Communication Strategy and regularly evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy and make necessary adjustments; enhance and strengthen the College’s engagement with multiple audiences, including potential undergraduate and graduate, resident and online degree program candidates, executive education participants, partnering companies, donors, educators and thought leaders in the field, and other influencers; establish a strategic operating plan, budget, and timelines for marketing and communications activities, as well as metrics for measuring success; develop an integrated approach to marketing the many initiatives and programs (resident and online) within the Smeal College of Business as well as strategies for growth and national recognition of strategically important programs; establish a strategic, dynamic, interactive, and comprehensive web and social media strategy; stay up-to-date on market conditions and competitors to develop innovative approaches and enhancements to the College’s marketing strategy; research, analyze and evaluate relevant market research to support integrated planning and implementation of relevant advertising, media, materials, and activities; support recruitment strategies, and lead collaborative efforts to achieve recruitment and yield goals in resident and online programs; develop marketing strategy and campaigns to support College goals for enrollment and engagement; provide leadership and inclusive supervision and management to the team, and promote collaborative interdisciplinary teamwork, open communication, and responsible self-direction within the department; serve as staff liaison to the Smeal Board of Visitors Brand & Communication Subcommittee; provide the dean, senior leadership, and faculty with talking points and briefing materials for major college events and presentations as well as support the planning and execution of special events and activities including the Executive Insights speaker series; direct unit-wide budget planning and financial management activities. Skills desired include: Experience in building brands and in designing, implementing, and evaluating strategic marketing campaigns; demonstrated ability to lead and effect change in a large, decentralized and complex environment; demonstrated adept organizational problem solving, strategic planning, and consensus building; collaborative work style, including development of strong and innovative teams; commitment to service excellence; innovation and creativity; clear and concise written and verbal communication; ability to successfully communicate to multiple stakeholders in various media; strong organizational skills, ability to set priorities, and a high degree of attention to detail; ability to manage multiple competing priorities concurrently as evidenced by timely completion of multiple tasks; exceptional knowledge of the latest digital and integrated marketing tools with significant experience in hiring and managing external media agencies; excellent analytical and problem-solving skills—ability to analyze large amounts of data and glean actionable insights; ability to work independently, as well as in a team, and manage multiple and competing priorities to ensure production of high-quality work; experience with Salesforce or other customer relationship management (CRM) system. Experience and Education Requirements: Nine or more years in strategic marketing related roles. Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline required; advanced degree preferred, with applicable professional experience and demonstrated success in relevant marketing and communications activities. Salary is commensurate with qualification and experience.
