The Summer College Opportunity Program in Education (S.C.O.P.E.) invites applications for our summer English (LL ED 297A) instructor position. The instructor will be in charge of a one credit language and composition course, LL ED 297A. This course seeks to develop college level proficiency in researching, writing, reading and rhetoric through the exploration of current issues and policies in the field of education. The instructor will work with dynamic youth who aspire to attend college but who need extra academic and social support to attain their educational goal. Applicants should have experience in teaching, research, urban education, and working with low SES, first generation and ELL students. Individuals should be strongly committed to providing educational and learning opportunities to underrepresented groups in a challenging but supportive environment. Other duties include mentoring S.C.O.P.E. students, engaging as a member of the S.C.O.P.E. staff team by providing support and participating in program meetings and activities. Applicants should possess a Master`s degree or equivalent, or be an active candidate for an advanced degree in the Education field; minimum of one or two years of teaching experience; ability to evaluate and document student progress; proven ability to supervise, engage, motivate, and inspire students to learn; teaching philosophy and methods that encourage the development of active and independent learning habits; knowledge of and ability to manage classroom behavior with clear objectives, expectations and engaging activities; strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to manage multiple task, be flexible and work as part of a team; excellent work ethic with strong problem-solving abilities; effective organizational skills and be comfortable using computers and instructional technology. Preference will be given to applicants with college teaching experience; who are graduate students enrolled in the College of Education at Penn State University; have previous experience working with diverse learners and similar summer bridge programs. This position is a Fixed-Term appointment for the 4 week summer program duration and should be understood as a 40 hours a week.
