The Traver lab on the Penn State Schuylkill campus is accepting applications for part-time Research Assistants for the 2018 summer. The students will be working on a project to investigate pathogen and parasite loads in honey bee colonies managed in different manners. Students will analyze the samples in the laboratory for Nosema spp. levels. Responsibilities would include but are not limited to: organizing samples from the field, prepare honey bee samples for genomic DNA extraction, perform DNA extraction, DNA quantification, and qPCR. The students will also assist in laboratory chores such as washing dishes, autoclaving, and making solutions. The student will also be responsible for keeping their bench area clean, picking up after themselves, and keeping a well-documented laboratory notebook. The candidates for this job should be 1) Biology majors from Penn State Schuylkill, 2) entering at least their second year, 3) have previous experience working with honey bees, and 4) have some molecular biology experience.
