Description

The Laboratories of Dr. B. Franklin Pugh, Willaman Professor of Molecular Biology and Evan Pugh University Professor, and Dr. Shaun Mahony, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, are seeking a highly motivated, senior computational scientist with proven experience in developing open-source bioinformatic software and research applications. Together, the Pugh and Mahony labs (pughlab.psu.edu, mahonylab.org) conduct state-of-the-art research in molecular biology and computational biology, with emphasis in eukaryotic gene regulation, epigenetics, epigenomics, tumor diagnostics, machine-learning and high-throughput computer-aided analytic workflows. This long-term position has the following responsibilities: Technical team lead for development of bioinformatics software and database platforms; Designing and identifying the requirements for interactive database applications; Programming analytical methods for epigenomic DNA sequencing data; Develop and support a codebase written with Python, JavaScript and Java. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in a field of study with focus on computational research methods or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Qualifications include: An understanding of molecular biology at a basic level, and genomics at an advanced teaching level; Professional software engineering training, courses, or on-the-job experience; Proficiency in one or more of the programming languages in our current codebase: Java, Python, C/C++; Experience developing and running software builds on a UNIX platform; Working experience with high-performance computing clusters preferred; Experiential knowledge programming for statistical methods expected; Experience with peer design, code reviews, source code management and deployment management is required. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
