The Computing Services Department (CSD) at The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking an IT Support Specialist who will be integrated into the PC Support Group and will provide computing support for all ARL employees. Responsibilities may include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: Provide 1st, 2nd, or 3rd tier PC support and diagnose/resolve problems with computer hardware, peripherals, computer configurations, and software; end-user computing support, to include providing orientation, computing Q&A assistance, and basic application support for ARL end-users; provide focused support for video teleconferencing, web conferencing, and conference room multimedia equipment/technology; computer build and configuration by applying ARL build/configuration to systems and customizing per end-user requirements; infrastructure/cable plant administration, to include patching computer/phone network ports to switches, as well as other cable infrastructure related administration; hardware/software evaluation and recommendation for both internal ITS and external customers; participate in process documentation and improvement efforts; and participate in endpoint management and administration functions. This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a High School diploma or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. An Associate’s degree in Information Sciences and Technology, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering is desired. Experience supporting the following is preferred: Windows systems in a domain configuration; end user applications, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe products, and other common engineering applications; video teleconferencing, web conferencing, and conference room multimedia equipment/technology; disk/file/e-mail encryption; and support and administration of Macintosh and/or Linux Systems. The following experience is required: Use, support, and administration of networked Windows systems; diagnosis and repair of computer systems; and diagnosing issues with network configurations from the endpoint. Excellent customer service skills, as well as written and verbal communication skills, are also required. Prior success in a customer service related role, and a keen attention to detail are necessary for this position. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation.
