An innovative, entrepreneurial, and experienced fundraiser and team manager is needed in the role of Associate Director for Special Audiences and Retention, a senior position within one of the nation’s largest and most successful annual giving operations. By pioneering new strategies for engaging special audiences, including current students and young alumni as well as other constituencies with affinities to a wide range of colleges and campuses, this Associate Director can help to strengthen the University’s grassroots fundraising efforts and create a pipeline of donors for the future. This position manages a team of three full-time Annual Giving specialists focused on special appeals and serves as a liaison to a personal portfolio of partner units, with the goal of increasing gifts at levels up to $10,000. The Associate Director also collaborates with the Office of Donor Relations in stewarding Penn State’s top annual donors through the President’s Club giving society and its associated benefits and events. This position reports to the Executive Director for Annual Giving and works closely with development teams, academic leadership, and students and faculty across the University. With experience not only in annual gift fundraising but also in management, and with an ambitious vision for the field of annual giving, both at Penn State and beyond, the Associate Director will: merge best practices from a successful annual giving career with a commitment to data-driven innovation in the field, helping to set the standard for higher education fundraising; collaborate with other central development offices in creating annual giving marketing plans, appeals, digital/social media strategies, and donor recognition activities and events that reinforce University-wide philanthropy messaging and priorities; guide the integration of robust, leading-edge analytics and donor research into Penn State’s special appeal efforts, especially those targeted to young alumni; develop customized solutions for partner units that reflect the needs of specific programs and the interests of specific constituencies while making efficient use of resources and personnel; supervise, mentor, and manage a team of annual giving professionals whose responsibilities include young alumni engagement and student philanthropy efforts; play a central role in the planning and execution of Penn State’s #GivingTuesday, a University-wide observance of the national giving event; train and partner with volunteers on a range of projects and events to build a larger donor base; personally manage a portfolio of partner units, and plan and execute appeal strategies leading to significant increases in annual support. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will also have: a track record of success in increasing annual gift support through innovative appeals and targeted strategies; Experience in leading goal-oriented teams and collaborating successfully with a broad range of colleagues; an ability to represent the Office of Annual Giving and the Office of University Development within the Penn State community; exemplary interpersonal and communication skills, with a particular sensitivity to the needs and interests of varied constituencies; a passion for higher education and an understanding of complex institutions; an appreciation for and understanding of diverse audiences and communities. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
