The Animal Diagnostic Laboratory in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA invites applications for a Veterinary Microbiology Residency training position. This is a full-time 48-week position renewed annually for up to 3 years, and is intended for clinical microbiology residency training leading to eligibility for American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM) certification. The candidate will be trained under the direct supervision of an ACVM board certified microbiologist in an academic veterinary diagnostic laboratory atmosphere. The program comprises in-depth hands-on training in a range of conventional and cutting edge diagnostic techniques in veterinary microbiology, Quality Assurance and applied research. Must hold a DVM/VMD (or equivalent) degree from an AVMA-accredited college/university (or a comparable international university) and an advanced degree (MS/Ph.D.) in veterinary microbiology. Rabies vaccination is strongly recommended for this position and would be paid for and provided by the University. Start date is approximately April 1, 2019. The Animal Diagnostic Laboratory is a member of the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System and is a full service, AAVLD accredited, NAHLN laboratory with histopathology, necropsy, virology, serology, microbiology, parasitology, and molecular biology sections. Duties will include performing bench work across all Veterinary Microbiology laboratory sections (bacteriology, virology, immunology and molecular diagnostics), working on case reports, consulting with submitting veterinarians and clients, assisting with undergraduate and veterinary extern instruction, and assisting with collaborative academic research. Other duties include active participation in basic and applied research and assist the microbiology section head in grant writing and research project management. The candidate is expected to present and publish applied research findings at scientific meetings and peer-reviewed journals.
