Work with Extension Educators and Community Partners to deliver and assess a range of garden focused environmental science programming with adults and youth in Philadelphia this summer, including a new garden-based Climate Change curriculum debuting in the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation system this summer. Help support day-to-day administrative functions of the Penn State Extension Master Gardener program, specifically support our goal to increase our PS Extension Master Gardener internal and external educational opportunities on social media, and with creative project-based learning materials. Work outside each week at an urban agricultural site helping to develop and deliver Penn State Extension content alongside fellow interns, community experts, Extension Educators, faculty and random Philadelphians. Gain tangible experience in the myriad aspects of program development and delivery, program assessments, working in diverse communities in urban settings – including varied levels of literacy, poverty, racial injustice, and public transportation. We expect that the intern be open to learning, exploring and navigating issues of race, class, and the historical antecedents to the generational poverty and concomitant social issues that have plagued Philadelphia in a supported setting, and to learn about options and resources within the communities Extension serves, PS Extension, National Urban Extension (NUEC) and elsewhere that might be used to address these important urban issues. Requirements: Junior or Senior standing. Successful candidate must be currently enrolled as a College of Agricultural Sciences undergraduate student. Work on Penn State Student Farm, or other gardening experience helpful, but not essential. Curiosity about educational practices, environmental and social issues a must. This work can be used either as an internship or independent study. Applicants must apply online with cover letter and resume through Penn State Jobs site. Contact Anna Herman aeh22@psu.edu with questions. Pay is $15/hour for 30 hours/week for 10 weeks from Mid-May through Mid-August.
