The Emotion Development Lab at Penn State University, headed by Dr. Kristin Buss, seeks a non-tenure open rank Research Professor position ( Start date of July 1, 2019 is highly desirable, but start date is flexible. Position will remain open until filled. This person will have the opportunity to work on two 5-year NIMH-funded studies. The first is designed to investigate the developmental trajectories of social anxiety disorder symptoms across adolescence, with a focus on identification of biobehavioral profiles of risk. The study has two data collection sites—Penn State, University Park; Penn State-PACT in Harrisburg, PA. The second study is an MPI study (Drs. Koraly Pérez-Edgar & Vanessa LoBue at Rutgers are other PIs) designed to examine developmental trajectories of early temperament and attention in infancy. These studies incorporate a number of techniques, including neuroendocrinology (cortisol), electrophysiology (EEG & ERP), psychophysiology (RSA), eye-tracking, direct behavioral observation, clinical interviews and questionnaires. All projects in Dr. Buss’ lab take advantage of the University’s broad resources, including the Child Study Center ( and the PACT ( ). The person in this position will primarily be responsible for overseeing and managing a large, vibrant lab environment currently running two large NIMH-funded studies. Responsibilities will include collecting and analyzing electrophysiological and behavioral data, writing scientific papers and presentations, and writing grants. Other duties will include managing research assistants, graduate and undergraduate students. Position qualifications include a Ph.D. in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field; at least 6 years postdoctoral experience in academic setting; strong record of scientific productivity including experience with grant writing and managing large research studies; experience with EEG acquisition and analysis; strong experimental and statistical skills; ability to work independently and in a team environment on multiple tasks and projects and to share one’s expertise with others. Experience with data collection platforms (e.g., BrainVision, Mindware, Eyelink), programming tasks (E-prime, Presentation), statistical analysis (R, SPSS, SAS) and general computing (MATLAB, Unix, Python) is highly desired.
