Description

The Student Garden at Penn State Behrend is offering paid opportunities for current students interested in working with the garden. Student growers will learn about gardening, harvest, marketing, community engagement, volunteer management, event planning and more. Previous experience in relevant fields is welcome, but not as necessary as the motivation to learn and contribute to a positive work environment. Student growers are the garden’s ambassadors. Essential roles include ensuring safety, produce quality, and a fun work environment are maintained among coworkers, volunteers, and other students or community members who may visit and work in the garden. Activities that student garden interns lead and participate in may include: attending weekly planning meetings; sowing seeds in greenhouse and field; transplanting plants; managing production and record-keeping regarding irrigation, fertilization, pest and weed management; harvesting and post-harvest handling of market crops for distribution to campus supported agriculture (CSA) shareholders and to Erie Garden Coalition; working with community partners including food pantries, farmers’ markets, community gardens and area schools; hosting volunteers and other visitors at the garden. Qualifications include: strong interpersonal and written communication skills; ability to prioritize and learn new tasks quickly, meet deadlines, and enjoy a fast-paced work environment; ability to work outdoors in varied weather and to lift 50 pounds with or without accommodation. Highest preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated interest in sustainability and civic and community engagement, and can explain how this opportunity will help them to reach their career goals. Own transportation to the garden is required.
