Description

Researchers from Penn State have received funding from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to examine the performance and adaptive characteristics of human-machine hybrid teams engaged in the design of unmanned aerial vehicles (i.e., drones). The specific scope of this appointment is to examine human-machine collaboration engaged in crowdsourcing (or co-creative) communities. This limited term postdoctoral research position will have an initial contract for one year, with the possibility of renewal, contingent on satisfactory performance and project funding. Primary job functions and responsibilities will be to: (1) design and conduct experiments to investigate human-machine collaboration in co-creative contexts, (2) grow and moderate a new online community engaged in crowdsourced engineering and/or design tasks, (3) interact with a software development team to communicate experimental requirements, and (4) mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students. The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in one or more of the following areas: industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, software engineering, human-computer interaction, and/or engineering design. Some background in or familiarity with human subjects research and statistical analysis is desired. Note that software will be developed by a separate team, but the selected candidate will have the opportunity to interface at various levels with research on deep learning and artificial intelligence. Applications should include a CV, a letter stating interest in the position and broader research interests, three relevant publications, and contact information for three references. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with an anticipated start date as early as February 2019 and potentially as late as June 2019. Earlier start dates are preferred.
