The Learning Edge Academic Program (LEAP) provides entering first-year students with the opportunity to begin their journey at Penn State University Park by way of a learning community. LEAP students take two courses together in groups of 24 that are reserved exclusively for first-year students, live together in the same residence halls, and have an upper-class student mentor to guide them through the summer session. This exciting and comprehensive experience is offered only to first semester undergraduates admitted to the University Park campus for the second six-week summer session. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Maintain office hours (approximately 20), assist in the development and execution of the LEAP mentor trainings in April and June, act as a resource for the LEAP mentors and students, assist with documenting (through blogs, photography, video, and other forms of social media) the events planned by the LEAP mentors, and serve as the primary contact for LEAP instructors. Be willing to travel and participate in evening and weekend activities, attend and assist in facilitating LEAP staff meetings held once per week in the evening, meet regularly with the LEAP Coordinator, assist the LEAP Coordinator and/or Administrative Staff Assistant with other duties as needed or assigned to support the LEAP mentors and students. Qualifications: Must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and be enrolled in a Master’s degree program (preferably in Education, but not required), knowledgeable about resources on campus (both academic and social), knowledgeable about or experience working with undergraduate students, understanding of collaborative projects and the ability to encourage group work, possess programming skills, and demonstrate excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Sharp organizational skills, ability to foster constructive and developmental conversations with LEAP staff and mentors, ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment, ability to maintain professionalism and act as a role model for mentors and students.
