The successful candidate for this position will join a research group led by Professor Fuqing Zhang at the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science and the Penn State Center for Advanced Data Assimilation and Predictability Techniques ( The tasks associated with this position include collaborating with research colleagues from around the world, using and continuing to develop advanced data assimilation and predictability techniques methodology developed at Penn State, working with postdoctoral fellows and graduate students who are learning these methods, traveling to research workshops or conferences to present research results, and publishing research in peer-reviewed journals. The research activities will focus on numerical modeling and ensemble-based methodologies for studying dynamics, data assimilation and predictability of atmospheric and environmental sciences, and will intersect with a number of different funded research projects ranging from severe weather to climate change. The successful candidate should have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: atmospheric dynamics and numerical modeling, model physics development, probabilistic forecasting, ensemble Kalman filter, variational and hybrid data assimilation and predictability techniques. A Ph.D. and at least 2 years of subsequent research experience are required for the position. Strong communications skills are also required. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. The salary will be competitive, commensurate with experience.
