The laboratory of Prof. Manuel Llinás at the Pennsylvania State University (http://llinaslab.psu.edu) is studying the malaria parasite P. falciparum and its interaction with the host red blood cell using a variety of approaches to investigate parasite-derived metabolic processes and biochemistry. In particular, we use mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to characterize the following: the genetic variation underlying metabolic differences in malaria parasites, the effects of antimalarial drugs, an in-depth probing of specific biochemical pathways in CRISPR-based Plasmodium mutants, and metabolic flux through the Plasmodium metabolic network. Candidates with interest in Plasmodium parasite biochemistry and metabolism are strongly encouraged to apply. In particular, we seek applicants to lead a team of investigators working on antimalarial drug target identification. This highly collaborative project is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and uses mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to determine the mode of action of a wide range of effective antimalarial compounds. Since this work is part of a larger consortium of activities surrounding the investigation of these compounds, detailed coordination of our efforts is critical to the success of this project. The Llinás lab has extensive experience measuring the effect of antimalarial drugs on parasite metabolism using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and NMR (Atanova-Koch et al. Science 2018, Cowell et al. Science 2018, Allman et al. AAC 2016). Applicants will be expected to conduct laboratory experiments independently while carefully managing and recording experimental conditions. Applicants are expected to be familiar with the current literature and projects of the lab, and will participate in group meetings and perform other related duties. Applicants should possess the ability to work well with others and must have excellent organizational skills and flexibility to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and have a strong attention to detail, and strong computer skills. Prior mass spectrometry experience is not required but is desirable. Applicants must have recently received their Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications.
