Description

Background: Penn State Extension Philadelphia connects Penn State researchers, educators and students with opportunities to collaborate with local organizations and apply their expertise to address urban challenges. Located in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic district, the Penn State Extension Philadelphia program areas include Urban Agriculture, Community Development, Horticulture, Nutrition Links, Master Gardener, and 4-H Youth Development. The City of Philadelphia is home to a flourishing variety of community-based non-profit organizations whose work is to improve the lives of all Philadelphians. These organizations not only promote healthy living practices, but also help to form other connections to bridge the gap between healthy lifestyles and healthy environments. Internship Opportunities: We are seeking a handful of enthusiastic undergraduate students for the summer of 2019. The selected interns will work under the direction of Extension Educators to collaborate with community partners, sharpen their skill sets, gain experience in unique urban environments, and build their professional networks. This internship is an exciting opportunity for students who are interested in the broader issues surrounding food justice and relationship building through community engagement. It is imperative that this person is capable and excited about a hard day’s work, and values time in the field. Open to current students, as well as recent graduates (graduation year 2018/2019) from the Pennsylvania State University, this internship will cover the salary and work expenses for each intern. A preference will be put on those who are bilingual in Spanish but is not a requirement. Our overall aim is to hire a cohort from diverse backgrounds and with diverse interests. Please submit a letter of interest and resume with your application to be considered for this opportunity. Areas of student interest for Internship: Urban Agriculture; Food Policy; Community Development; Nutrition Education; Youth Leadership Development; Social Media/ Public Health Communication. Specifics: Duration - 10 Weeks (Monday, June 3, 2019 – Friday, August 9, 2019) Payment - $15.00 per hour / Wage Payroll Position. Hours - 30 hours per week. Responsibilities/Expectations: Due to the broad range of internship concentrations available via our Extension Educators, responsibilities may vary depending on individual project selections. Some potential examples include: Assist Penn State Extension Educators in exploring and developing current and future opportunities for community collaboration and impact; Take part in the management of an urban farm: bed preparation, planting, weeding, watering, harvesting and other daily farm-related tasks; Become familiar with operations of a community supported agriculture (CSA) program: boxing shares, distribution and weekly/seasonal marketing efforts. Assist at weekly market stands; Under the direction of Penn State Extension Educators, provide mentoring and educational programming to young people involved in community teen programs and summer camps; Lead tours for Penn State faculty and staff, local community members, schools and other organizations as needed; Participate in community-driven dialogues and training around race, class, power and privilege; Be prepared to tackle any issues that may arise, as each day will typically be different with varying degrees of challenges.
