Description

The Kennedy lab (https://sites.psu.edu/KennedyLab/) at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking up to two Postdoctoral Scholars to lead projects addressing how ecological dynamics drive the evolution of infectious disease agents. The last century has seen tremendous gains to human health and lifespan largely due to increased control of infectious disease. But evolution constantly threatens to undermine these gains, through the evolution of drug resistance, vaccine resistance, increases in virulence, and the emergence of novel pathogens. In the Kennedy lab, we combine empirical and quantitative approaches to study how disease ecology shapes pathogen evolution, with the goal of understanding how to prevent or delay adverse evolutionary outcomes. Projects include computational and/or experimental approaches to tackling questions about the evolution of drug and vaccine resistance, and the evolution that precedes and follows host jumps. Experimental work will be conducted in the recently discovered C. elegans-Orsay virus system, and closely related systems. Ideal candidates will have a Ph.D. in a relevant field (such as evolutionary biology, ecology, mathematics, statistics, epidemiology, public health, bioinformatics, genomics, microbiology, virology), a strong interest in evolutionary biology, and a history of productivity. Experience working with C. elegans and/or mathematical modeling is an advantage. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire, with excellent possibility of extension. Applicants should submit a cover letter describing their research experience and how these experiences relate to the position, a CV, and contact information for three references. For informal inquiries, please email David Kennedy (dak30@psu.edu). Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled.
