Description

The Materials and Manufacturing Office (MMO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at The Pennsylvania State University is looking for a mechanical/materials engineer to join our Materials Processing Division. Responsibilities include: Support the Principal Investigator (PI) in the development and completion of experimental plans for sintering of powder materials, analyze the results, and prepare technical reports and presentations; provide direction for the technical staffing in the setup and operation of the equipment in the field assisted sintering techniques (FAST) laboratory; and ensure safe operation of the equipment and that all safety and operational procedures are followed. This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline (Professional Engineer license accepted in lieu of Bachelor's degree) or higher , or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor’s degree (Master's degree preferred for higher level position) in Materials Science, Engineering Science, or Mechanical Engineering is desired. Experience in the design and fabrication of dies for sintering processes, solid works, and material analysis using finite element programs is preferred. Experience requirements include: Working knowledge of how to sinter materials by various techniques, including FAST; vacuum hot pressing and hot isostatic pressing; and working knowledge of characterization of sintered materials by various techniques, including hardness, SEM, X-ray and transmission electron microscopy. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. This is a one-year, fixed-term renewable appointment.
