Penn State’s Sustainability Institute (SI)is seeking an energetic marketing professional to provide leadership for the development and execution of a communications strategy for the Institute. The incumbent will be responsible for the management of SI’s communication strategy across all platforms including social media, website, e-newsletter, event promotion, printed collateral, reports and interactions with news media to deliver sustainability-focused messages and communication to both internal and external audiences in compliance with University guidelines and policies. The Sustainability Communication Strategist will collaborate with SI staff, University Office of Strategic Communications, communication interns, and external service providers to enhance Penn State’s reputation as a sustainability leader in higher education and to enhance visibility of the Sustainability Institute with internal and external stakeholders. Experience with development of communication strategy, knowledge of sustainability concepts, and the ability to work collaboratively are required. The Sustainability Institute provides communications resources for every campus, college and unit at Penn State with regard to sustainability news, events and opportunities, and works to fulfill Penn State`s goal of integrating sustainability across the university’s core functions of education, research, outreach and operations, and across Pennsylvania. The Sustainability Communication Strategist will interact with Penn State’s Central News Office to do media outreach. Applicants should submit up to three writing samples in addition to a resume and cover letter. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience pitching stories to or working with news organizations is preferred. Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate expertise in writing, with special consideration given to experience in journalism, marketing, editing, and related fields. Familiarity with AP style, social media platforms, Drupal (or similar content management software), Microsoft Office, email marketing platforms (e.g., MailChimp, Constant Contact) and Adobe Creative Suite preferred. Experience working with graphic designers is preferred. Therefore, the successful candidate for this position will have a demonstrated commitment to sustainability and to diversity and inclusion. The successful candidate will also possess excellent project management skills to oversee significant projects for the Sustainability Institute such as production of an annual report, website re-design, and developing a brand identity and branding guidelines. Capacity to think strategically with regard to sustainability communication is essential. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
