Description

The Division of General Internal Medicine is seeking a full-time Exercise Coach for a five year trial funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) (http://bit.ly/1cnbh7w). This position will follow study protocols and report to the lead Exercise Coach. This individual will not routinely lead adults in exercise, but will instead provide training, oversight, and supervision for peer leaders that lead an exercise program for older adults. This individual will also meet regularly, in person and by phone, with older adults, to measure their progress and provide brief motivational counseling. These meetings will include helping older adults overcome barriers to exercise, such as injury and fear of falling. This individual will also work closely with the project managers and research staff at Penn State, as well as staff at community sites that house the exercise programs such as churches and community centers. Duties will include reporting site progress to the study’s exercise physiologist, traveling to local exercise sites, gathering and reporting data to research staff, entering data into a REDCap database, exercise coaching to peer leaders and participants, and other duties as assigned. Local travel around Central Pennsylvania (York, Hershey-Harrisburg, and Lancaster) is required. Candidate with experience as a fitness instructor/personal trainer or education in an exercise/health related field is preferred. Candidate will need to obtain a NCCA accredited fitness and wellness certification (ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA) within 8 weeks of hire. The ideal candidate will also have the following traits: detail-oriented, enthusiasm for exercise/fitness, experience working with the senior population, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and strong organizational skills. Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Since this position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties, successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of re-funding.
