Description

The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) at Penn State in cooperation with the Eberly College of Science is seeking an Advanced CyberInfrastructure Systems Administrator to join our operations team. The systems administrator will be an integral contributor to a fast-paced and growing team of specialists at an institute supported by an exciting $45 million Penn State investment in research CyberInfrastructure. Penn State’s elite researchers use our high-performance research cloud to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data mining, and other high-performance computing operations. A primary duty of this position will be the operations and support of a 192-node 4600-core compute cluster and associated software infrastructure to further the scientific goals of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) project. The Penn State Gravitational-Wave Group consists of academics Chad Hanna and Bangalore Sathyaprakash and several postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. They played a leading role in the Nobel-prize winning discovery of gravitational waves by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo. You will be responsible for ensuring the prompt availability of data from the world-wide gravitational-wave detector network to Penn State resources and for ensuring compatibility with specific gravitational wave analysis software. As our Advanced CyberInfrastructure Systems Administrator, you will play a key role in: Helping to establish a shared vision and take responsibility for the achievement of team goals; developing plans, schedules and requirements for innovative approaches to solving system, application, and hardware problems; collaborating with scientific users, peers, and vendors to determine the source of problems and resolve them; and, developing methods to pro-actively monitor and enhance ICS systems to support optimal system performance and stability. In addition, you will: manage the installation and configuration of hardware, operating systems, and system software and perform regular maintenance on various system components as defined by the manufacturer or ICS guidelines; and, create and update system, user, and operational documentation. Finally, you will serve as the liaison to research groups, proactively evaluating usage, performance, and issues to enhance user experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of the function and operation of system components such as HPC clusters, parallel file systems, high-speed interconnects, networks, schedulers, and storage are a plus.
