As the locus for one of the University’s primary strategic goals, Penn State Global Programs (GP) is an area of growth and opportunity for those seeking a career in the field of international education. The Education Abroad Office (EA) is within Global Programs, the Education Abroad Adviser reports to the Manager of Education Abroad Advising and works closely with the entire advising team, Director, as well as the EA academic records and faculty led programs teams to support office-wide strategic goals. The Education Abroad Adviser (EAA) provides guidance and information to students on the availability, value, and academic appropriateness of study-abroad programs within the designated program portfolio. Responsibilities are varied and include a mix of the following: Advising: Work directly with students both in one-on-one and group sessions; addressing groups of students, parents, and faculty through a variety of media. Advising on program costs, financial aid policies and education abroad scholarships; responding to inquiries about study abroad. Orientation and student preparation: Preparing pre-departure information, working with the online tutorial, and leading orientation sessions; working with student peer advisers and student workers; maintaining supportive and constructive communication with students during the advising, application, study abroad, and return stages. Program Management: Preparing and updating information and materials for EA programs within StudioAbroad, application review and student selection, maintain partnerships with providers, host institutions, and program staff abroad. Programming, outreach, and recruitment: Support and lead EA initiatives for programming and outreach to prospective study abroad students. Activities include but are not limited to; Education Abroad Fair, information sessions, returned student programming, social media, marketing support, events, etc.; Crisis support: collaborating with appropriate crisis response team members in the case of student emergencies abroad. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree as well as Forum on Education Abroad Certification in Standards of Good Practice preferred; Strong preference for applicants with experience living, working, and/or studying abroad; Candidates with experience in higher education admissions or some other highly contextual customer service role are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates must be prepared to work with students and their support networks addressing a number of questions related to the education abroad process. Applicants should be comfortable with the use of information technology. Experience with StudioAbroad and Microsoft Office are highly desirable; Ability to communicate persuasively, public speaking excellence, attentiveness to detail, and ability to handle several tasks at once are valuable assets for this job; Some nights and weekends required; Must be eligible to work in the U.S. either as a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. Requirements: The EAA is expected to be committed to the field of international education and best practices.
