The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is seeking to hire an Engineering Support Specialist. Responsibilities include: assist in the design, modification, assembly, documentation, and testing of standard and non-standard electronic and mechanical instruments for highly specialized research equipment; assist in the selection and purchase of materials and components for departmentwide use; interact with vendors and interdepartmental contacts for assigned projects; coordinate the installation, calibration, operation and/or maintenance of standard and non-standard instruments, experimental hardware, and/or systems in the laboratories; identify system faults and repair needs for various types of research instruments. Assist faculty and students in research projects, demonstrations, and practical knowledge of equipment and materials. Must have a strong foundation, understanding and experience in engineering disciplines of electronics and electro-mechanical systems. This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Computer literacy and experience in operation of electronic test equipment required. The individual must be able to engage with a diverse customer base including faculty, staff and students. The candidate should be creative, and self-motivated. This position would also be an integral part of the department safety program and interact with laboratory personnel, (undergraduate, graduate, post doctorial, and faculty) and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to identify and correct safety related issues. This is fixed term appointment, funded for one year from the date of hire, with good possibility for refunding.
